When Khan Sajjad stepped off the plane in Canada to begin his studies at Niagara College, he carried more than just luggage. Like many international students, he brought along hopes, anxieties, and a quiet determination to succeed in a new country.
He expected late-night study sessions, unfamiliar classrooms, and the pressure to perform. What he didn’t expect was how greatly a single student support program—GuardMe’s Ambassador Program—could help shape his academic life and sense of self.
“I was going through a really stressful time when I first got involved with GuardMe,” Khan recalls. “But becoming a GuardMe Ambassador gave me something I didn’t even know I needed—a sense of purpose.”
Through the program, Khan found more than mentorship—he discovered a community. Volunteering led to leadership roles, which led to public speaking, which led to awards—and all of it gave him something deeper: confidence.
“It wasn’t just about mental health support or academics. GuardMe genuinely cared about who I was becoming.”
Suddenly, doors began to open. He joined the International Department at Niagara College, represented the school at conferences, and became a known, trusted face on campus. Where there had once been isolation, there was now a support system. And where there had been self-doubt, there bloomed ambition.
“I developed leadership and people skills, found mentors, and made friends who truly cared. I never expected that kind of encouragement or recognition.”
Today, Khan looks back at those first uncertain days with a quiet sense of pride. GuardMe, he says, didn’t just help him cope—it helped him rise.
“Without their support, I don’t think I would’ve had the courage to step into leadership or get involved in the community. GuardMe gave me a platform to connect, grow, and thrive.”
