Coming to Canada as a student is a transformative experience, often filled with challenges and opportunities. For Sabina Wakilongo, originally from Congo, the journey has been life changing.

In the fall of 2023, Sabina joined the WUSC Student Refugee Program cohort at Canadore College, where she is pursuing a Social Service Worker diploma.

"Higher education has always been my dream," Sabina shared. "But opportunities were scarce after being forced to migrate to Malawi. As a refugee, accessing degree or diploma programs presented significant challenges."

Despite these hurdles, including the difficulties of completing her Malawi School Certificate for Education exams during the COVID-19 pandemic, Sabina’s dedication paid off. Out of a competitive pool of over 200 applicants, she was selected for the WUSC program, opening the door to new possibilities.

Sabina credits GuardMe for playing a pivotal role in her educational journey. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to study at Canadore College. The support from organizations like GuardMe has been instrumental in making this possible,” she said. “Their contribution to the WUSC Student Refugee Program opens doors for students like me to access quality education and build a brighter future.”

Sabina’s story is a testament to the transformative power of education, especially through the WUSC Student Refugee Program. The impact of support from organizations like GuardMe resonates deeply, enabling students to achieve their dreams and shape their futures.

The Canadore Foundation echoes this sentiment: “GuardMe’s contributions since 2021 have had a tremendous impact on our students, helping them work towards their educational goals and becoming the next generation of the evolving workforce.”

GuardMe is proud to stand alongside initiatives that empower students like Sabina, making a meaningful difference in their lives and futures.
